IT Security - Understanding the Current Internet Threat Environment
Mike Shafer, Shafer Consulting
Session 2:
8:30 AM
-
9:20 AM
Ask a few people what Internet security is all about and you'll likely hear about bright, somewhat socially inept teens pounding on computers in their parents basements, creating pizza and pop fueled mischief and mayhem. Up until around 2004 or there abouts this image would have been largely correct. The most prevalent group of trouble makers starting with the rise of the public Internet in the mid-1990s indeed did mostly fit this profile. Then it all changed.
Starting around 2004 the hyperactive teens faded into the background as the scourge of the Internet and were replaced by a force much more problematic and with different intentions. Teenage bravado gave way to quiet professionalism and motivation for making headlines was replaced with making money. Lots of it.
Around 2004 the Internet experienced the replacement of mischievous teen pranksters with ranks of professional electronic criminals who have remained on and become increasingly skilled at their craft. A craft whose intentions mainly revolve around defrauding others for financial gain. Moreover the new breed of professional cyber-criminal really isn't concerned with who's supplying the assets.
In today's world business use of the Internet has become a matter of fact and accompanying that fact is the reality that it can be a dangerous place for the unprepared. Fortunately a modest understanding of the tools and techniques used by on-line criminals can take us a significant way down the path of preparation.
In this presentation we'll be taking a largely non-technical, big-picture look at the current state of the Internet threat environment and work to create a frame of reference that participants can use to communicate with their IT staff or service providers.
In addition participants will receive an IT security blueprint in the form a of reference manual I've created to help those outside of the IT profession more easily understand the threats and the necessary steps for defense.
